The Blessing of the Bicycles is an opportunity for the community to recognize the advantages of taking alternative transportation to work. In previous years Good Sam had clergy from various faiths (Episcopalian, Catholic, Buddhist, Jewish and Islam) sprinkle holy water, pray and chant as bicyclists received blessings. Bicyclists came from as far away as the Channel Islands as well as the local LA bicycle messenger contingency. In addition, the LA Bicycle Coalition, MTA, REI and other companies set up booths at the event. Present in events include Eric Garcetti, Tom LaBonge, Governor’s office, Senator Cedillo, Assemblyman Fabian Nunez and other elected officials.
SOME OF THE DAY’S EVENT INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
- Blessings from The Rev. Michael S. Bell to cyclists to continue their safe ride to and from work.
- Rev. Bell to read a specially selected biblical passage.
- Representatives from various faiths (Episcopalian, Catholic, Buddhist, Jewish and Islam) impart their blessings.
- Moment of silence honoring cyclists who have suffered from bicycling collisions.
