Airport2Park: Santa Monica Airport Walk

Airport2Park will join with Los Angeles Walks who will be sponsoring a walk around the perimeter of the Santa Monica Airport Saturday, August 6th, 2016, at 10am beginning in Clover Park (south west corner).

la_walks_website1– Start location – Clover Park. 2600 Ocean Park Blvd, Santa Monica 90405
(Meet at the southwest corner of Clover Park at the fence next to Santa Monica Airport runway)

This will be a moderate 3.5 mile walk around the perimeter of the Santa Monica Airport where participants learn about issues and impacts relating to the airport, experience pedestrian access issues, see progress on the new 12 acre Airport Park Expansion and envision a future grand park at that location.

no_bikes_no_peopleMichael Brodsky, a Professor at Loyola Marymount University, Member Santa Monica Spoke Steering committee, Co-Founder and Board Member of the Santa Monica Airport2Park Foundation will be the Ambassador for this walk around the entirety of Santa Monica Airport. This walk promises to present a unique view of parts of Santa Monica that most people rarely see and even fewer pedestrians actually get to walk.

The group will walk the perimeter of Santa Monica Airport (SMO) to see and learn about the current issues and community impacts relating to this facility and to hear about potential creative new proposals to transform and repurpose this property into a future grand park that will be open and accessible to all.

We invite you to come and show your support for Airport2Park with Los Angeles Walks!

The park which is served by Breeze Bike Share and Big Blue Bus Line #8, Free Parking is also available.

Don’t forget to bring a hat, sunscreen and water!

Los Angeles Walks is a pedestrian advocacy group that makes walking safe, accessible and fun for all Angelenos.  The Santa Monica Airport2Park Foundation is working to transform Santa Monica Airport into a grand park for everyone.

Airport Park Expansion Community Event

On Saturday, June 18, 11am-2pm, the City of Santa Monica will hold the first public planning workshop for the upcoming expansion of Airport Park. Mark Rios, the landscape architect chosen by the City to design the conversion of the first 12 acres of the airport into a park, will present his initial ideas and ask for community feedback. You are invited!

The Santa Monica Airport2Park Foundation, the non-profit formed to advocate for turning Santa Monica Airport into a park, urges members of the public to attend this community event and contribute to the planning process for this new park on our airport land.

“The promise of Measure LC, which the voters passed in 2014 to make sure that airport land will be converted to parkland, is now turning into reality with the expansion of Airport Park onto 12 acres of asphalt that until recently was used to park airplanes,” said Neil Carrey, president of the foundation. “We at the Airport2Park Foundation urge the public to come to the meeting on June 18 to join the dialogue about the park expansion.”

The City’s event, which will take place in the north parking lot (off Donald Douglas Loop South) at the existing Airport Park (3201 Airport Avenue), from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 18.

Airport2Park: Meet Designer Mark Rios

Come meet Mark Rios, recently hired by the City of Santa Monica to design the 12- acre expansion of Airport Park at Santa Monica Airport. He will give a talk to community members at a special meeting hosted by the Santa Monica Airport2Park Foundation, on Friday May 13th. Food and Drink will be available.

RSVP today (before May 12): info@airport2park.org

airport2ParkThe evening will be an opportunity for the community to hear from acclaimed designer Mark Rios about the parameters of the project for expanding Airport Park on land the City has reclaimed from aviation use, and Mr. Rios’ preliminary ideas for the possibilities there, as well as give feedback to Mr. Rios on what residents would like to see in the expanded park.

Mr. Rios’ firm, Rios Clementi Hale (RCH), has been tasked by the City with community outreach, research feasibility and concept design, and ultimately design of the park expansion. RCH previously worked in Santa Monica on Euclid and Douglas Park and also designed iconic parks and public spaces in Southern California, such as Los Angeles Grand Park, the Rancho Cienega Recreation Center and the L.A. Zoo Event and Play Space.

The park expansion became possible in 2015 when the City’s 1984 Agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration expired, freeing up land that had been used to park airplanes, which have recently been removed and is being repurposed into a park as stipulated by the passage of Measure LC in November 2015.

We are looking forward to seeing you there!
