Westside Global Climate Strike

November 29, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm

A coalition of youth-driven groups are organizing a LA regional climate strike on November 29th, Black Friday, at Tongva Park in downtown Santa Monica, 12-3PM.  Alexandria Villasenor, the Fridays For Future activist from New York, co-founder of US Youth Climate Strike and founder of Earth Uprising will attend and be one of the speakers at the strike.  A march is planned through Downtown Santa Monica, a die-in, live performances, networking time, tabling for organizations and media presence.

Regardless of why you ride a bicycle – our beloved bicycles are zero emission and part of climate crisis solutions!

“We would love to turn out a contingent of people of all ages – with all kinds of bikes – to make the point that bicycles are part of climate solutions”

The strike is organized by multigenerational activists from all different organizations, ally businesses, and schools including Paul Revere Middle School, Santa Monica High, Pali High, Venice High, Loyola Marymount University and Santa Monica College.

MORE ABOUT THE STRIKES
With the devastating consequences of climate change becoming more clear with each passing day, a powerful wave of the climate action has been spreading across the globe. Young people around the world have been rising up to defend our future and going on strike. In the September Global Week For Future strikes alone, 7.6 million people worldwide took it to the streets.

September Climate Action was just the beginning. Acts of civil disobedience (like strikes) are one way that ordinary people can force those in power to listen. That’s why we need to continue building power together.

Future strikes are already being planned – including on Inauguration Day 2020. With each strike, we can become better organized, get more people engaged, and have greater impact.

WHY SHOULD WE STRIKE?
Communities across Los Angeles County are already suffering from the devastating effects of climate change, from drought, to ravaging fires, to heatwaves. People across LA are forced to live next to oil and gas facilities that poison the air around them. The Westside must come together to build local power, stand up for frontline communities, and take action towards the issues affecting our community!

We demand a livable future, and REAL ACTION on climate from our elected officials. It is time for us to stand up and decide: what will we do when our community is under attack? Will we go on business as usual? Or will we rise up instead?

Event Theme: Divest vs Invest. Divest from fossil fuels and destoying nature. Invest in Restoring nature, Funding renwable energy and nature-based solutions, and Protecting Indigenous and Frontline communities.

LOGISTICS: This is a Zero Waste event! Please be sure to bring your own reusable water bottle and do not bring any single use packaging!
