Car Free Friday: Santa Monica!
October 7, 2016
We launch the first-ever #CarFreeFriday in Santa Monica Friday, October 7th!
Today and every Friday moving forward you can join in!
Here’s what you need to know to get going and have a car-free and carefree day:
- Learn about your options.
Some employers, co-working spaces, and schools offer transportation benefits. For example, all students (under 18 years of age) will get to ride the Big Blue Bus for free this week. All they need to do is print or show this coupon on their phone or tablet. Ask around about resources like this at your employer, co-working space, or school! - Allow for some flexibility in your schedule.
Give yourself a few extra minutes so you don’t have to worry about being late. - Map your route in advance.
Use Google Maps or the other recommended apps on smgov.net/gosamo to find out the best way to get to where you’re going car-free. - Make sure your TAP card is ready and loaded.
Pick up a TAP card at a nearby Expo station or the Big Blue Bus Transit Store to access all the trains, buses, and even bikes. - Try it out with a buddy.
Ask around the office to see if anyone wants to meet at a local Expo station or ask an apartment mate to take transit together to school or work. You can even watch City of Santa Monica’s Francie Stefan and Curbed’s Alissa Walker go car-free on 10/4 at 11:00 a.m. PT during a Facebook live walking tour.
Last but not least, make sure you the street team on Friday morning! They’ll be at the Expo stations, a couple Big Blue Bus stops, and other places around the city giving away FREE #CarFreeFriday swag and surprises. Don’t forget to join the fun and share your car-free experiences using #GoSaMo and #CarFreeFriday #BikeSM. You can also follow along to see how others are celebrating!
