Progress Report: Airport 2 Park

Santa Monica is moving forward with two positive projects which should improve the quality of life for our community.

1st the City is currently shortening the Airport runway by 1500′ so that it will become safety compliant and to exclude larger jets. This runway shortening project might also provide the opportunity for additional new park access space at the ends of the runway.
SMO is now closed to all air traffic from 9pm-7am and will close ENTIRELY for two weeks at the end of the year until the runway shortening project is completed.
2nd the 12 acres of the Airport Park Expansion currently being designed by noted park designer Mark Rios, has moved forward to the important Environmental Impact Report stage. The park design will include full size playing fields, pickle ball courts, community gardens, playgrounds, walking paths and will provide much needed new recreational resources and opportunities for our community.

GREAT NEWS!

Meanwhile the six acres of “Interim Open Space” is now open for everybody to use! And it is getting used!

This new public space is located adjacent to the current Dog Park on the future site of the Santa Monica Airport Park Expansion while it is being planned. It is the perfect place to walk, jog, ride a bike, skateboard or push a scooter without any obstruction or traffic. It is especially perfect for kids learning to ride a bike. The 6 acres are open sunset to sunrise. Enter from the lot behind the playing fields. Check it out!

COAST: City of Santa Monica Open Streets Festival returns on Sunday, October 1, 2017,


PLUS you can get in a Walk with the Mayor to all the fun!

Join us in celebrating COAST: City of Santa Monica’s Open Streets Festival for everyone with various activities planned on our community streets as well as in our parks! There will be fun “hubs” with the following themes: mobility, cultural and sustainability, including live entertainment and food stalls.

Santa Monica Spoke will be in the Mobility Zone at the Santa Monica Civic on Main Street. We will have a Bike Rodeo / Skills course, a Bicycle Exhibition on carrying Cargo by Bike along with MANY MANY MORE fun and engaging activities!

If you are wondering, “what’s COAST?”
Santa Monica’s COAST Open Streets Festival marries the concept of shutting down the street to cars with a cultural festival – back for its second year! This year, the City of Santa Monica is pulling off even more live music, interactive art stations, and loads of food. The route is two-miles long, so can easily be walked, biked, skated or navigated by wheelchair.  

A few of the Top Things COAST’s organizers are most excited for:

  • All-string female Mariachi band Las Collbrí (Farmers Market)
  • Hip-hop dance group Antics (COAST Stage, 1 p.m.)
  • Kiel Johnson and reDiscover Center build Dream Tree from repurposed materials (Sustainability Zone)
  • Twenty Minute Treks, guided tours from poets and historians (Ocean & Broadway, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

September: Walk with the Mayor

For the month of September, we join Mayor Ted Winterer and Adopt-A-Walk for a two mile walking adventure that explores one of three neighborhood walking routes.

The walk on September 9th will leave from Reed Park — at the corner of California Ave. and Lincoln Blvd — at 10 am and loop back to Reed Park just in time for all the festivities of the Buy Local Health and Fitness Festival. All you need are good walking shoes and your water bottle. The walk will be a delightful 2 mile loop through the neighborhood with the mayor, staff and the YOU!

Dogs, children and strollers are ALL WELCOME!

About the Mayor’s Ride:
Biking (AND WALKING) is better with friends! The monthly Mayor Ride was born at the Breeze One year Anniversary Event with a proclamation from our City Manager Rick Cole. We led the 1st Ride with the Mayor which was joined by the California Bicycle Coalition Board of Directors in January 2017 – This free local event has continued with monthly community bike rides with Mayor Ted Winterer and City Staff since in January with a different theme monthly. This month we are mixing it up with a walk to get a fresh and different perspective of our community. Come meet the Mayor, City staff, and your neighbors while enjoying the Santa Monica sunshine on this conversation paced, lovely walk!

In 1976, Santa Monica became the first city in the region to establish community gardens.
Main Street, Euclid Park, Park Avenue & Ishihara— It’s just the beginning! 

August Ride with the Mayor, Community Gardens Bike Tour
followed by HandleBar Happy Hour at Bareburger!

  • Wednesday, August 16th
  • 5:30pm roll 
  • Ride begins at Santa Monica City Hall

    end at Bareburger, 2732 Main Street 

This month, Join us for another Ride with Mayor on a tour of Santa Monica’s Community Gardens.  We’ll wind up at one of our #BikeLocalSM favorites, Bareburger on Main Street for an extended HandleBar Happy Hour #HBHH.

Come meet us, Mayor Ted Winterer, City staff, and your neighbors while enjoying a fun bike ride in the breezy Santa Monica sunshine! The ride will be about 7 miles and should take about 1.5 hours. The plan is to leave from City Hall just after 5:30pm. Ride route is HERE

Bring your own bike, helmet, lock & water bottle. Family friendly – however children should be capable of street riding or in an appropriate child seat or trailer.

The City of Santa Monica currently has 4 community garden sites
Main Street Gardens, 2200 Main Street / 73 individual garden plots;
Park Drive North and South, Park Drive off of Broadway / 38 individual garden plots;
Euclid Park, 1515 Euclid / 11 individual garden plots and 3 workshop plots;
The newest addition is the Learning Garden at Ishihara Park 2909 Exposition Blvd which serves as Santa Monica’s first Communal Garden as well as an Urban Agriculture Education Site. In an effort to expand gardening knowledge to the many apartment dwellers around the City, workshops and tours of the garden and adjacent Urban Fruit Tree Orchard are planned to take place regularly throughout the year.
