Conversation with Dutch Students: Urban Cycling Institute, Rotterdam

May 2 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

Santa Monica Main Library
— 2nd floor Mulit-Purpose Room

Social will follow at the West 4th & Jane

Join us as we kick off Bike Month with an evening conversation with this years group of students from the Cycling Institute in Rotterdam. The presentations will include a how the Dutch are approaching technology and bike safety as well as where we park all these bikes once we get folks riding as well as the effects of transportation poverty.

The topics for this evenings conversations will be:

  • Technology and bike safety â€“ Students will present on 5 different approaches used in Europe to stimulate bike usage by means of different types of technology. Some cases are focused on travel time reductions, others on safety and or infrastructure improvements. The cases will firstly be explained (how does the system work?), before they will discuss results and improvements that they fell need to be made to achieve better results.
  • Bicycle parking â€“ the students  looked into bike parking in several Dutch cities, parking in city centers and esp. near train stations.
    • Parking cleans up the streets from chaos where bikes are parked everywhere.
    • Technology enters parking structures and some are now as advanced if not more than car parks.
    • Bike parking plays a role in Ditch cities for using the bicycle to the city center, School and work.  In fact, bike parking seems to enhance bike riding. Surprised?
  • Transportation poverty results of 200 initial interviews in difficult neighborhoods in order to find out what their preferred mode of transport is in the city and in their neighborhood. Lack of access to mobility keeps people locked up in their neighborhoods and results in social isolation.
    • When a bicycle could literally be a vehicle to gainful employment.
    • People with lack of mobility options interviewed felt exclusivity when it comes to participating in city life.

Every year we host a new group of students visiting Los Angeles from the Cycling Institute in Rotterdam.

Santa Monica leads again with Clean, Renewable Energy!

100% Renewable Energy will be Santa Monica’s Default!

It’s Unanimous! On October 23rd, the Santa Monica City Council voted unanimously to have 100% renewable energy be the automatic option for all local energy customers.
Santa Monica is a member of the Clean Power Alliance (CPA), a community choice energy program that will soon deliver renewable energy to customers across Southern California.  CPA is offering 100%, 50% and 36% to customers starting in 2019.  Each member agency chooses the default tier of renewable energy for its constituents. With councils unanimous vote last evening, – as staff reported – all Santa Monica residents will enjoy 100% renewable energy lighting up their homes and electrifying our world — local businesses to follow.

In Santa Monica, beginning in February 2019, our energy default will now be 100% renewable!

Thank you to Santa Monica for being a part of the Clean Power Alliance of Southern California, to implement community choice aggregation, so that decarbonizing our electrical grid will be the new normal as we advance carbon-neutrality and strengthen our resilience and commitment to our community and the environment.
The latest news from the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change alerts us that we have twelve years to stave off increasing greenhouse gas emissions in order for humanity and Mother Earth to have the opportunity to heal and thrive. Santa Monica’s 100% renewable energy choice is another bold, confident and wise choice for a healthier more sustainable and resilient future.
You can view the video of the council decision to inspire and feel empowered that our leadership is committed to a more energy resilient and environmentally sustainable future.

CASM Climate Corps Apprenticeship 2018 — Apply Now!

CASM Climate Corps Apprenticeship 2018 — Apply Now!
“Exercising my ‘reasoned judgment,’ I have no doubt that the right to a climate system capable of sustaining human life is fundamental to a free and ordered society.” —U.S. District Judge Ann Aiken, Juliana v. U.S. (Our Children’s Trust Climate Lawsuit)

Climate Action Santa Monica invites high school and college students to apply for the CASM Climate Corps Apprenticeship 2018 program.
Do you know a young person ready to take initiative to be a bright face of the future and an engaging presence for a safe climate and true sustainability? This summer, the CASM Climate Corps 2018 Apprenticeship is open to high school and college students committed to caring for the biosphere and helping to create a resilient community.   Different from an internship, we are emphasizing ongoing learning experiences to enhance individual pursuits and imaginative teamwork, so that each Climate Corps Apprentice will communicate with diverse people living, studying, working or visiting in Santa Monica about the impact of climate change on our lives, showcasing actions that each person, family, neighborhood or group can take and sharing available Santa Monica, regional or state resources.
If you are willing to challenge yourself and energize your thinking and talents to be a part of the CASM Climate Corps 2018, please submit an application.  Early bird deadline is Wednesday, June 6, at 6 p.m. (Pacific Time).  Deadline is Friday, June 8, at 6 p.m. (Pacific Time).

Interviews will be conducted on Saturday, June 9 and Sunday, June 10, unless otherwise arranged for those with special circumstances.

Partnering with the City of Santa Monica and others, in two years, the Climate Corps has garnered much attention and appreciation.  As Santa Monica City Manager Rick Cole has attested, investing in the Climate Corps, is “probably the most cost-effective use of taxpayers funds that you will find anywhere in Southern California because this was fueled by more than the stipends that the participants received. It was fueled by their youthful passion and belief in a cause much bigger than themselves.  I’ve been inspired by their talents, their caring.”
Year three promises to be inspirational in powerful, joyful ways.  Apply!
