Off the Chain with Tamika: Building Community

Staff SquashesHi LACBC Family,

It’s been an exciting month since I last checked in! I’m now a married lady, well rested from a honeymoon, and more pumped than ever about what’s ahead for LACBC.

To wrap up this month, I’m excited about LACBC’s opportunities to talk about our work and have some fun. Let’s start with the fun. On Thursday, October 29th, we’ll be throwing our second annual Firefly Ball! Last year’s gala was phenomenal, but we’re upping the ante and honoring some great folks for all they do for biking in Los Angeles. Check out the event here, buy tickets, and celebrate with us.

This weekend, we’ll be celebrating five years of CicLAvia, riding around the Heart of L.A., and unveiling the limited run of our #bikeLA shirts for people who sign up or renew their membership.

Tamika DeskFinally, we’ll be speaking on a number of panels and as one of the plenaries at the California Bicycle Summit in San Diego. The focus of the summit is equity, and it’s an appropriate link to what I’ve been talking about in my first year at the helm of this amazing organization. In addition to talking about equity, the whole team at LACBC has been working to put our fight against inequity into action. This hasn’t always been an easy lift. It’s a cultural shift for LACBC and the bicycling advocacy world as a whole, but we’re committed to not only doing it for ourselves and for the Los Angeles community, but also leading the way nationally.

I have centered my vision for the organization on utilizing the bicycle as a tool for social justice and making social justice the center of our work. We can be better by building bridges and rich coalitions with groups that might not otherwise talk about bikes.

Bikes bring people together and build community. It’s part of why I love bikes, this job, and this organization. Community should be inclusive and reflect Los Angeles’ diversity.

Inclusion requires being intentional and prioritizing historically marginalized communities. We’re working with new partners to elevate the voices of the marginalized who have lacked a voice. We want the voices of women, youth, low-income people, people with disabilities, and people of color to better inform and lead our work.

In building community that is diverse and inclusive, we need to consider a myriad of issues like displacement, housing, and community development. We’re speaking up about how bikes factor in, but we’re also making sure that sometimes we just step back, listen, and support. This work has been transformative for us as individuals and for LACBC as an organization. It’s allowing us to participate in new spaces where bikes might otherwise be forgotten and inform our policy and advocacy work in new and exciting ways.

We hope you’ll continue to be engaged, get involved, and let me know if there is ever anything that you have questions about. My vision is always informed by what our members want and need. I’ve loved getting to know so many of you and look forward to talking with more of you as I close out my first year. Thanks for your support. Until next month!

Ride On!

P.S. Our goal is to increase our membership by 10% by the end of November, and we hope you’ll help us get there by renewing early or getting a friend to become a member.

Designing a Park by Bike, update from Airport2Park

Airport2Park News & Update: Airport2Park Design by bike

Nine USC graduate landscape architects under the direction of internationally renowned landscape architect Aroussiak Gabrielian (FORGROUND Design) took a practical approach in choosing bicycles for the their site visit to Santa Monica Airport where they started working on a three month project to design a park to replace the controversial facility. They jumped at the chance to ride their bikes to evaluate the site.  Since the site was designed many years ago expressly to exclude pedestrian access, the bicycle turned out to be the right tool to explore the airport site with a four mile ride around the perimeter fence – which someday could be a dedicated bikeway.

USC is a fairly bike friendly campus with a rapidly growing bicycle culture so nearly everyone had a bicycle and were quite completely comfortable on a group ride. The class demographic includes students from across the country and around the world. There was one student from China, who had NEVER been on a bicycle, yet even she didn’t even miss a beat. She took the extra initiative and learned to ride a bicycle just for this visit, though in the end, opted to rent a Tandem from Perry’s just to be sure that she would keep up.

Leading the ride was Michael Brodsky, a Loyola Marymount University Professor and Santa Monica Spoke member. Also in attendance was Mike Salazar, a Santa Monica Architect, member of the Santa Monica Conservancy and an expert in historic preservation. Both are founding members of airport2park.org  which is a group dedicated to creating a grand park to replace the Santa Monica Airport.

Aroussiak Gabrielian is using this opportunity for her USC group of graduate landscape architects to put practice into real life. She has designed a rigorous timeline of environmental, social analysis and needs assessment that will inform the development of the project. Each student has an assigned specialty including the natural environment, history, topography, site mitigation, and community connectivity. All data collected informs the final design proposals which should be completed by May 2014.

During the 3 hour bike ride there were many stops to talk about the role of parks in the social fabric of the community. Discussions ranged from the westside’s regional need for natural habitats, water reclamation, and carbon rejuvenation, to the more local needs for bike paths, sports and playing fields due to the severe lack of parks in Santa Monica.  They also had the opportunity to explore linkages between the south side of the airport site where the Santa Monica College classrooms (and public art galleries) are located, with the north side Ocean Park community by what could be a newly created bicycle and pedestrian access.

While the ride was constantly interrupted but he roar of jet planes and the smell of jet fuel, the participants on their bikes were also able to see the spectacular views of Century City with the Hollywood sign to the east and to the setting sun on the Pacific Ocean in the west. These views are currently reserved for only those privileged to be flying in private planes or jets, yet these coveted vistas could one day invite thousands of hikers and bikers to enjoy what could be a most extraordinary park in Santa Monica.

IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM Airport2Park: The Santa Monica City Council will be meeting on Tuesday, March 25th to consider what to do with Santa Monica Airport after the FAA contract ends in July 2015. For more information on how you can support in this project visit Airport2Park for updates for the latest updates and how you can get involved. If you would like to see this turned into a grand park complete with 150 acres of walking and biking, you may write the city council before the March 25th meeting at council@smgov.net

We are very proud our Director Cynthia Rose is among the 10 finalists for Advocate of the Year 2014! We invite you to visit the Alliance website to view the full list of Advocacy Award nominees this year. When you read the accomplishments of these dedicated individuals it is no wonder we are seeing the momentum for walking and biking building in the US. The Alliance Advocacy Awards are held in conjunction with the League of American Bicyclists’ National Bike Summit. The 2014 Advocacy Awards ceremony, presented by Bicycling Magazine, will be held on the evening of Monday, March 3, 2014 at RFD in Washington DC.

Hokie as it may sound, it is such an honor to be nominated and in the company of such incredible finalists. Though I don’t know them all I am privileged to have worked with several of them. I am especially honored to share this list with my friend and colleague on the California Bike Coalition Board of Directors, Samantha Ollinger. She is founder and Executive Director of Bike San Diego. Sam “blamed” me for inspiring her into her current role – I say Sam is a brilliant example of getting the job done, with class and efficiency. SHE is indeed an inspiration!  And not to be left out – I could not do what I have done without the years of commitment and dedication of the Santa Monica Spoke Steering Committee, the talented and engaged City staff and our community – YOU ALL are helping set the climate of the future – Thank you!!
With incredible advocates and national organizations like the Alliance for Biking and Walking and the League of American Bicyclists – WITH YOUR SUPPORT WE WILL ALL INDEED BE WINNERS!
